When I put up a review of each day’s play, I like to add a photo. A “picture is worth a thousand words” and all that. The thing is, instead of taking an image from a newspaper or Cricinfo, I decided to do my own. A few of us here in Australia got together and we re-enact highlights from each day’s play. So we might do a re-enactment of Matt Hayden celebrating a century, only the venue is a backyard in Brisbane rather than The Oval. And the stumps are a cardboard box. And yes, those really are fake ears on our version of Adam Gilchrist.
My name is Darryl, and I live in Brisbane, just a 5 minute drive from the Gabba when the traffic isn’t backed up all the way down Stanley Street. I was never really that great at cricket, but I absolutely love the game. I spent a few years playing junior cricket with Lilydale Cricket Club, then moved up to the seniors at Canterbury Gardens (culminating in a premiership win in the Eastern Suburban Churches’ comp down in Melbourne). I also did the training through the old Victorian Cricket Association to become a fully qualified umpire, and did a season of that. Tough gig. After moving to Brisbane I played several seasons of indoor cricket, but I’ve now moved on to playing football (the one with the round ball) with Eastside FC in the QBSA comp.
During the week I work as a commercial photographer with my own small business. It’s busy, fun, challenging and exhausting, but I enjoy it.
Back to the blog …
I first started a cricket blog on the Ashes in May 2005 through Typepad. It was a lot of fun, and my photographic re-enactments were popular with the kids. I only ever intended to cover the 2005 series, but I had so much fun with it that I decided to get it going again for the 2006-07 series.
So here you are. If you like what you see, send me an email or leave a comment somewhere. I’d love to hear from you.
