Northamptonshire v Australians

Posted by: TheAshesBlog.com In: Players| Team selection ()

It’s been an interesting first two days in the tour match between Northants and the Australians. Let’s go through some of the Aussies who are under pressure:

Phillip Hughes: out cheaply in the first innings, and has so far made a lucky 65 not out in the second innings. He doesn’t look like he’s about to dominate the day like he used to, and I’d be tempted to dump him. No hard feelings, but it just looks like he’s lost his mojo in England.

Shane Watson: the guy is looking surprisingly good. Made runs, picked up cheap wickets – handy to have in the side, but could he open the innings? I reckon he could, and I don’t think it’s that big a gamble. Give him a go.

Mitchell Johnson: I really thought he’d come good in this game, but instead he finished with 42 for 0 from 7 overs. The selectors will be reluctant to dump him, but I wouldn’t blame them if they decided enough is enough.

Peter Siddle: was the leading wicket taker in the first innings, but was erratic.  If the selectors want to keep Johnson for another go, then perhaps Siddle needs to go.

Stuart Clark: bowled well, and looks reliable. I think Clark would fit well into the team, and he actually takes wickets. He’d be an ideal replacement for Peter Siddle.

So, based on performances so far, he’s my Aussie XI for Edgbaston:

Katich, Watson, Ponting, Hussey, Clarke, North, Haddin, Johnson, Hauritz, Hilfenhaus, Clark

What do you think?

I reckon keep hughes, drop hauritz and then add either watson or macdonald… If you need a spinner then use clarke, he is only 5% worse than hauritz. I figure Macdonald can tie up one end for say 20 overs of the day which gives the bowler at the other end some more potential and you also pick up another batsman.

No need to tinker with the batting line up at this point we just need to find some bowlers who can take wickets.

I don’t know about that, Steve. Hauritz was a hack, but he’s currently the leading wicket taker for Australia (equal with Hilfy) and has been very, very good. However, the Edgbaston pitch is probably going to suit the quicks more than the spinners so that might force the selectors to drop Hauritz.

That’ll do from me. I almost sound well informed now, and that’s not my style. I’ll stick to the silly photos. :)

Cheers mate.

I think there is a difference between bowling someone out and the batsman getting themselves out. I know hauritz has got some wickets but he doesn’t to me to bowl anything that really troubles the batsmen at all. He is ok but i dont think he is any better than M Clarke. I also think that the overall team could gain more by filling this position.

I heard on the news this morning that hughes will be dropped in favour of watson….??? I think if we are sticking with Johnson then we should afford hughes the same opportunity.

I also heard Hughes has been dropped…because of the flaw with the high ball, but he will come back bigger and better, like most that were at one stage dropped..like Hayden…Clarke…Ponting, yes even Warnie was dropped at one time.I think Hughes should have been dropped further down the order though. Also do not forget at Lords those 3 bad decisions that went against Aussie top bats. They still came home just 120 runs short, that was a mighty effort. As for the aura Strauss talks about, well as Ponting said the aura is earned.England have never had an aura…this team will build one.:)

Steve: Regarding Hauritz, I totally agreed with you a month or two back, but I think Hauritz has improved enormously in England. I’m impressed. He has been bowling better than the part-timers, and although he needs further improvement I reckon he’s doing alright.

SallyAnne: good comments re Hughes. He has been dropped, but he will develop into a much better cricketer. We can’t expect him to dominate the world when he’s had so little experience.

TheAshesBlog.com is the home of the re-enacted Ashes photos, where you'll find pivotal Ashes moments re-enacted in an Aussie backyard. So we might show Ricky Ponting celebrating a century, only the venue is a backyard in Brisbane rather than The Oval. And the stumps are a cardboard box. And KP doesn't really look like that in real life ... or does he?
